Located in the southwest of Tokyo, Tama City is at the center of the area, and it is the largest new town in Japan (a garden city developed as a new urban area) in the Tama Hills. It is 40 to 170 meters above sea level, and there are two eroded valleys, the Oguri River and the Koda River, which flow into the Tama River. It has a total area of 2,884 hectares, about 15 kilometers east to west and about 5 kilometers north to south, and a planned population of 340,000. The Keio Teito Electric Railway Sagamihara Line (now the Keio Electric Railway Sagamihara Line) and the Odakyu Electric Railway Tama Line, both private railways, were opened to the central Tama Center Station in 1974-1975 (Showa 49-50), and construction was continued further westward, and the area was completed in 1990 (Heisei 2). In 2000, the Tama Toshi Monorail was opened between the city and Tachikawa. Before development, about two-thirds of the area was forest and one-third was farmland. There are many ruins, mainly from the Jomon period. Parts have been turned into parks, and the remains are preserved at the Tokyo Metropolitan Archaeological Research Center. Surveys began around 1963, the urban plan was decided at the end of 1965, construction began around 1968, and the first residents moved in in 1971. The Urban Renaissance Agency, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, and Tokyo Metropolitan Housing Supply Corporation are the main developers of the project. The new housing urban development project was completed in 2006. Each living area (residential district) is about 100 hectares and consists of 23 residential districts, and is characterized by abundant greenery and pedestrian-only streets. Nearby are Tama Zoological Park, Mogusa Garden, and Seiseki Memorial Hall.
