(1) Also translated as "people's impeachment." A system of direct democracy. Generally, a system in which public officials can be removed from office before the end of their term by the will of the people or residents (request for dismissal). Requests for dissolution of parliament, rejection of decisions by referendum, and popular review of Supreme Court judges in Japan are also types of recalls. → Referendum (2) A system in which, if a product is defective, the manufacturer publicizes the fact to consumers and recalls and repairs the product. In the case of automobiles, the recall system was codified in the 1994 amendment to the Road Transport Vehicles Act.
