1625‐96 One of France's greatest legal scholars. Born into a family of lawyers, he studied at the University of Bourges, and after working as a lawyer, he served as prosecutor of the Superior Court of his hometown, Clermont-Ferrand, for 30 years from 1655. He was a lifelong friend of his fellow townsman B. Pascal, with whom he fought to defend the faith of Jansenism, and was even entrusted with his personal documents at the end of his life. His originality lay in his reconstruction of the principles of Roman law from the perspective of religious principles (love of God) and the needs of the times (love of one's neighbor), that is, in accordance with natural law and rational order. This work was recognized by Louis XIV, and from 1685 he devoted himself to writing as a hermit at the Port-Royal Abbey near Paris. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
