A political party organization with its origins in the Tammany Society, which was founded in New York City in 1789 as a kind of charitable organization. It was named Tammany Hall after the building in which it was headquartered. After Aaron Burr used it as a Democratic Party organization in the 1800 presidential election, the term came to refer to the Democratic Party machine that controlled city politics from behind the scenes. The word Tammany comes from the name of an Indian clan chief in colonial Delaware, who was known as St. Tammany. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
