Also known as mice, they belong to the rodent family, Muridae (illustration). They are thought to have originated from the Mediterranean region through central Asia and China, but are now found everywhere humans inhabit, from the tropics to the polar regions. Body length is 6.5-9.5 cm, tail length is 6-10.5 cm, and weight is 12-30 g. The dorsal surface of the body is gray-brown, and the ventral surface is pure white in wild or semi-wild subspecies, while in domesticated ones it is slightly lighter in color than the dorsal surface. They live in human dwellings and the surrounding fields, moors, and forests, and are active during the day and night in 45-90 minute cycles.
