…The Independent Motion Pictures Company (IMP) was established in 1909 by Carl Laemmle (1867-1939), one of the pioneers of American cinema, and was founded in 1912 by merging several smaller companies. Laemmle, who started out as a movie theater manager, believed that the commercial foundation of film was the fame of the actors, and he recruited Florence Lawrence (1886-1938), an actress who was known as the "Biograph Girl" from Biograph, with a contract for an unprecedented salary of $1,000 a week at the time, and used her name in the title of the first film, thus laying the foundation for the "star system" in Hollywood. In order to compete with the Motion Picture Patents Company, which had a monopoly on everything from film production to theatrical release, he moved his base to Los Angeles and in 1815 built Universal City, a major film city in the San Fernando Valley (today there are guided tours of the city), making a major contribution to making Hollywood the center of the movie industry.
