The title of a Kyogen piece. Oni Kyogen. In this age of Buddhism, humans are constantly going to paradise, so the lord of hell, King Enma (wearing a mask of Buaku), falls into a state of famine. He stands at the crossroads of the six paths, waiting to send any dead souls to hell. Then, a dead soul passes by, pounding a large bamboo pole and smelling of blood. Enma immediately tries to attack him, trying to drive him to hell, but he is no match for him. This is no surprise, as his opponent is the warrior Asahina Saburo (shite). Enma is pushed down, told of his exploits, and forced to guide the way to paradise. In the Middle Ages, when hell was a familiar fear through Buddhist tales and the like, the backbone of this piece is the healthy earthlyism of the common people, who even laugh off Enma.
