Tamanishiki Sanemon - Tamanishiki Sanemon

Japanese: 玉錦三右衛門 - たまにしきさんえもん
Tamanishiki Sanemon - Tamanishiki Sanemon

Sumo wrestler. Born in Kochi City. In 1916 (Taisho 5) at the age of 13, he entered the Nishonoseki stable and made his debut three years later. He became an ozeki in 1930 (Showa 5), and won three consecutive championships from October of the same year, but his daily behavior led to him being denied the chance to become a yokozuna. After seven tournaments in which the yokozuna title was vacant, he was recommended for promotion in 1932, and from January 1933, he showed off his heroic ring-entering skills with his imposing 1.73-meter, 135-kilogram physique. In his later years, he gained popularity as a rival of Futabayama, but died of an illness at the age of 35 in Osaka during a tour in 1938 (Showa 13). He won the championship nine times. During his active career, he served as the head stablemaster of Nishonoseki and trained many disciples, and from his school various stables were established, including Hanakago, Sadogatake, Kataonami, Futagoyama, and Taiho.
