The island is a rare example of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that has emerged above sea level, and the central tectonic zone is home to many lava-producing fissures (gjá), volcanoes, fumaroles, hot springs, and earthquakes. The land on the east and west sides of this border moves away from each other by an average of 1cm per year, making it a model site for the ocean floor spreading theory. In January 1973, a northeast-southwest-trending fissure suddenly appeared in the middle of the night on the eastern side of Heimaey Island, off the southern coast, and volcanic blocks and lava flowed out, forcing the 5,200 residents to temporarily evacuate to the mainland.
