Abbreviation: EXIM. A special bank fully funded by the government that mainly handles foreign trade financing. Its predecessor was the Export-Import Bank of Washington, which was established in 1934 for the purpose of settling debts to the former Russian Empire, and was renamed in March 1968. Its funding comes from Treasury Department loans and Federal Reserve loans. Its main business is (1) development loans that directly lend to the governments of foreign countries for their development plans, (2) export financing for American exporters of capital goods, (3) medium-term export credit guarantees for commercial banks, (4) agricultural product loans, and (5) import financing. In principle, foreign loans are made under the tied loan method, which requires the procurement of American industrial and agricultural products.
