An annual herb of the Orobanchaceae family that parasitizes Artemisia capillaris. It is widely distributed from the temperate to tropical regions of Asia and Eastern Europe, and also grows in sandy areas on the coasts of various parts of Japan. It lacks chlorophyll and is yellowish brown in color. The rhizome is thick and swollen like a lump, and attaches to the host's roots with fleshy root hairs. The stem is thick and cylindrical, unbranched, and initially has egg-lanceolate scale leaves and long white soft hairs. In early summer, a thick inflorescence appears at the top of the stem, and pale purple flowers bloom densely. The corolla is tubular, about 2 cm long, has no pedicel, and has a calyx divided into two parts. The plant is hairy overall. The fruit is a narrow elliptical capsule that produces many black seeds.
