France, Britain, and Spain began interfering in Mexico's internal affairs in 1862. In Mexico, the 1855 revolution saw the victory of liberals supported by the poor masses, with Juarez becoming provisional president and drawing up a constitution, confiscating the property of the clergy, who were connected to the large land-owning aristocracy, and decisively suspending payments on foreign debts. Faced with this situation, France, Britain, and Spain jointly dispatched troops to pressure the repayment of debts, landing in Veracruz in 1862. Britain and Spain soon ceased their intervention, but France continued to interfere alone. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
