A Bantu-speaking agricultural people living on the fertile southern slope of Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. Their population is estimated at over one million. They practice intensive agriculture using livestock manure and irrigation, and are one of the wealthiest and most modernly organized peoples in Africa. Their main crops are finger millet and bananas, and their cash crop is coffee. The Chaga are made up of 400 major immigrant clans, mainly the Kamba, Teita, and Masai, and they maintain a relatively egalitarian culture. Traditionally, they were a collection of politically independent chiefdoms, with a social system based on patrilineal descent, and polygamy is common. They have a male age hierarchy similar to that of the Masai. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
