A bird of the Wagtail family (illustration) in the passerine order. Total length is about 16 cm. The back is gray-brown with white eyebrows, and the underside is light yellowish brown. In summer plumage, the underside is darker. It breeds on the rocky beaches and tundra of Great Britain and the Scandinavian Peninsula in northwestern Europe, in the valleys and wet grasslands around lakes in the Alps and high mountain regions of southern Europe, in coastal and high mountain regions of northeast Asia, and in the tundra and highlands of North America, and spends the winter in North Africa, southern Asia, the United States, and other places. It does not breed in Japan, but those that breed in Siberia and Kamchatka arrive in October and remain there until April.

スズメ目セキレイ科の鳥（イラスト）。全長約16cm。背面は灰褐色で，白い眉斑があり，下面は淡黄褐色。夏羽では下面の色が濃くなる。ヨーロッパ北西部のイギリスやスカンジナビア半島の磯浜やツンドラ，アルプスやヨーロッパ南部の高山地方の谷や湖沼ぞいの湿った草地，東北アジアの海岸地方と高山地方，さらに北アメリカのツンドラから高地で繁殖し，冬は北アフリカ，アジア南部，アメリカ合衆国などで越冬する。日本では繁殖しないが，シベリアおよびカムチャツカで繁殖したものが10月ころ渡来し4月ころまでいる。
