This art museum is located in Villa Borghese in Rome, Italy. In 1891, when P. Borghese went bankrupt, part of the Borghese family's collection was put up for auction, but was purchased by the state and opened to the public as a museum in 1902. The villa was built in 1613-16 by the Dutch architect Jan van Santen as a summer residence for Cardinal Scipione Borghese (1576-1633), who started the collection. The museum's collection includes approximately 600 pieces. Notable works include Boticelli's Madonna and Child, Titian's Sacred and Profane Love, Bernini's Apollo and Daphne and David, and Canova's Statue of Pauline Borghese.
