…He embodied the “little American conscience” in films such as “A Pine Tree” (1936) directed by Henry Hathaway, “Bullet Hole in the Dark” (1937) directed by Fritz Lang, “The Woman in the Black Orchid” (1938) directed by William Wyler, “Young Lincoln” (1939) and “The Grapes of Wrath” (1940) directed by John Ford, and gained attention as a talented star. After volunteering for the Navy in 1942 and serving in prison, he appeared in “The Great Duty” (1946) and “Fort Apache” (1948), both directed by John Ford. After that, his Broadway hit "Mister Roberts" (1948) led to a series of subsequent performances, and in 1955 he returned to Hollywood with the film adaptation of that play. He continued to appear on Broadway and on television, while also working in a wide variety of genres including westerns, comedies, melodramas, and war films, and in 1978 he received the American Film Institute's (AFI) Lifetime Achievement Award.
