Serge - Sage (English spelling)

It is one of the most widely used practical fabrics, originally made of worsted wool, but nowadays it is mostly made of synthetic fibers. There are two theories about the origin of the name serge: one is that it comes from the Italian word sergea, meaning "wool and silk fabric," and the other is that it comes from the Latin word serica, meaning "silk," but it is difficult to determine which is the case. The fabric is a diagonal weave, and since it is woven at roughly the same density in both the warp and weft directions, the twill lines are at nearly 45 degrees, and the woven surface running from the lower left to the upper right is generally the front of the fabric. There are two types of finish: one with some nap left on the surface, and one that is clear cut.

The type of fabric is usually a regular diagonal pattern, but there are also herringbone serge with a chevron diagonal pattern and double serge with a double weave, and the thin ones are used in spring, summer and autumn, while the thick ones are used in winter, and are used in large quantities for school uniforms, etc. It is relatively inexpensive, but the downside is that it easily rubs off and becomes shiny during use, so care must be taken when ironing.

広く一般に使われる実用的な織物の一つで、もと梳毛(そもう)糸を使った毛織物が多かったが、現在では化合繊によるものがほとんどである。サージの名称は、イタリア語の絹毛交織物sergeaからきたという説と、ラテン語の絹sericaからきたという説とがあるが、いずれとも決しがたい。組織は斜文組織からなるもので、経緯(たてよこ)ともほぼ同じ密度に織られているため、綾(あや)線は45度に近い線になっており、左下から右上にかけて走っている織面のほうが一般には生地(きじ)の表となる。仕上げには、表面に毛羽を多少残したものと、クリヤー・カットしたものとがある。

　生地の種類には、正則斜文にしたものが普通であるが、山形斜文にしたヘリンボン・サージ、二重織としたダブル・サージなどがあり、薄地のものは春・夏・秋に、厚地は冬の服地に使われ、通学服などには多量に用いられている。比較的安価であるが、使用中に擦れて光りやすいのが難点で、アイロンかけには注意する必要がある。
