Arctotis (English spelling)

Japanese: アークトチス（英語表記）Arctotis

A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family, with around 30 species found in South Africa. The flowers are flower heads similar to daisies, but the stems and leaves are covered with short white hairs. The flower heads are beautiful with large, developed ray petals. Young flowers open during the day but close at night. The genus name means "bear's ears" in Greek, referring to the way the seeds are wrapped in fluff. The species usually cultivated are hybrids of A. grandis Thunb. (African daisy), and the flowers are white, cream, yellow, orange, red, wine-colored, etc., measuring 7-8 cm in diameter and with unusual colored spots at the base of the petals.

南アフリカに30種ほど分布するキク科の多年草。花はマーガレットに似た頭状花をつけるが，茎葉ともに短い白毛でおおわれる。頭花は舌状花が大きく発達して美しい。若い花は日中に開くが夜は閉じる。属名はギリシア語でクマの耳の意で，種子が綿毛につつまれているようすをたとえたものである。ふつう栽培されているのは，ハゴロモギクまたはアフリカギクA.grandis Thunb.(英名African daisy)を基本種とした交配改良種で花は白，クリーム，黄，橙，紅，ワインカラーなどで花径7～8cm，花弁の基部に異色の斑がある。
