...The story is best known from Euripides' tragedy Hippolytus (performed in 428 BCE, in which the author won the first prize), as well as from the tragedy Phaedra by Seneca and, more recently, from the French dramatist Racine's Phèdre. Another version says that Hippolytus was revived by the god of medicine Asclepius at the request of Artemis, and Ovid and other Roman poets say that he was then carried by Diana (the Roman equivalent of Artemis) to the sacred grove of Aricia in Latium, where he served her under the name Virbius (the twice-lived).
