A unit of territory established by organized religions for the purpose of administrative and religious services. In the Roman Catholic Church, a parish is an area in a church where a priest serves as pastoral care and where the faithful can attend Sunday Mass. Dioceses are established above many parishes, usually called dioceses, and are overseen by a bishop, forming the basic administrative, pastoral, and missionary unit of the Church. Parishes are organized hierarchically, and important dioceses are headed by archbishops, called archbishoprics. In the Middle Ages, dioceses and archbishoprics often covered large secular areas as well. In the Church of England, a parish is the smallest local administrative unit in the country.
