Utricularia - Utricularia

Japanese:
Utricularia - Utricularia

A perennial plant of the Utricularia family (APG classification: Utricularia family). A hybrid of Utricularia gracilis and Utricularia maxima. It has no roots and floats in ponds and marshes, producing spherical overwintering buds that sink to the bottom of the water to hibernate through the winter. The leaves grow densely alternately and spread out to the left and right, pinnately lobed 3 to 4 times on a flat surface. It has numerous insect sacs that capture and digest tiny animals in the water. The flower stalk is 10 to 25 cm tall and bears broad, ovate, scaly leaves. It blooms yellow, spurred flowers from July to September. The fruit does not ripen. It is found in Honshu and Kyushu. Its name comes from the fact that the leaves at the end of the stem, which grow in clusters like a raccoon dog's tail, grow underwater.

The genus Utricularia has flowers that are mostly racemose and have two-lobed calyx. There are about 250 species in the world. There are 13 species recorded in Japan.
