Poise - Poise (English spelling)

Poise - Poise (English spelling)

The unit of viscosity in the CGS system. Its symbol is P. It is written as grams per centimeter per second. Although it is a non-SI unit, it is exceptionally designated as a legal unit of measurement in the Japanese Measurement Act. For the viscosity of free-flowing liquids, centipoise is more practical, but it is a non-SI unit. For example, acetone has a viscosity of 0.324 centipoise at 20°C. The viscosity of gases is often expressed in micropoises; air has a viscosity of 181 micropoise at 20°C. It is named after Jean LM Poiseuille (1799-1869), a French physician and physicist.
