A plain that stretches from east to west in northern Germany. It lies between the central German mountain range and the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, and is continuous with the plains of the Netherlands to the west and Poland to the east. Although it is a tectonic plain as a whole, it was covered by continental ice, mainly in Scandinavia, during three cold periods in the Pleistocene, and is composed mainly of glacial deposits of sand, gravel, clay, and loess (yellow earth) brought from the north. It is over 100 meters thick, and the Mesozoic and Tertiary strata that underlie it lie below, with only a small portion of it exposed on the surface. Although this area is a plain, it is not uniformly flat, with some areas exceeding 150 meters above sea level, and it is rich in gentle undulations.
