A scientific research city in eastern Tennessee, USA. Population: 27,000 (1990). The town was built in 1942 as part of the Manhattan Project as the site of the world's first uranium separation plant for atomic bombs. Uranium-235 and plutonium-239, used in atomic bombs, were developed here. Research on nuclear energy and nuclear physics is conducted mainly at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (established in 1943). In addition to nuclear reactor facilities and nuclear fuel factories, the town is also home to a nuclear research facility jointly operated by 45 universities and the American Atomic Energy Museum.
