Nautical charts show coastal features and waterway conditions necessary for navigation, while marine publications are books that compile detailed information about waterways that cannot be shown on nautical charts, information about navigational aids, celestial almanac for celestial navigation, and tide tables. The conditions of waterways, coasts, ports, and other things shown on these charts change naturally or artificially, and these changes directly or indirectly affect navigation safety.

船舶が安全な航海を行うために必要な水路に関する情報。海図，水路書誌，水路通報および海象，気象情報などをいう。海図は航海をするのに必要な沿岸の地物や水路の状況などを示したもの，水路書誌は，海図では表しきれない水路に関する細かい情報や，航路標識に関する情報，天測航法用の天測暦，潮汐表などを書籍の様式にまとめたものである。これらの海図などに載せられている水路，沿岸，港湾などの状況は自然的，あるいは人為的に変化するが，その変化は直接または間接に航海保安に影響する。
