Philipp Jakob Spener

Philipp Jakob Spener

A leader of German Pietism. A pastor. He initiated a movement for internal renewal of the Lutheran Church, forming the first generation of the German Pietist movement. During his studies in Geneva, he was influenced by the Calvinist Jean de Labadie (1610-1674), and brought reformist ideals, such as thorough evangelism and strict church discipline, to the Lutheran Church. At the same time, with the intention of realizing the Lutheran ideal of the priesthood of all believers, he encouraged active religious activities among the faithful, and opened "collegia pietatis" (assemblies of the pious) to deepen the spirituality of the faithful. This movement caused resentment among the people, and was particularly attacked by orthodox scholars, but as a result it deepened the inner nature of the Lutheran Church and revitalized its activities. His main work is "Pia Desideria" (Pious Appeals) (1675).
