Dartmoor

Japanese: ダートムーア（英語表記）Dartmoor

A plateau consisting of fields and marshes in Devon, southwest England, United Kingdom. It has an area of 945 km2, an average elevation of about 520 m, and the highest point is High Wilheys Peak (621 m), one of the relict hills called the Tor. There are many Bronze Age ruins, and in the Middle Ages it was important as a royal forest and a tin producing area, but today it has a desolate treeless landscape, where sheep and ponies are pastured and granite and china clay are mined. Okehampton at the northern end is the commercial and tourist center, and Princetown in the center has a prison built in 1806 to hold French prisoners of war during the Napoleonic Wars.

イギリス，イングランド南西部，デボン州にある原野や湿地からなる台地。面積945km2，平均標高約520mで，最高点はトーtorと呼ばれる残丘の一つであるハイ･ウィルヘーズ峰(621m)。青銅器時代の遺跡が多く，中世には王室林やスズ産地として重要であったが，現在は樹木のない荒涼たる景観を示し，羊･小馬の放牧や花コウ岩･陶土の採掘が行われる。北端部のオークハンプトンOkehamptonが商業･観光の中心地であり，また中央のプリンスタウンPrincetownには1806年建設の刑務所があって，ナポレオン戦争時のフランス人捕虜などを収容した。
