Mohorovičiĉ, A.

...A branch of earth science that studies the earth using physical methods. It is divided into two major branches: geodesy, seismology, volcanology, geomagnetism, etc., which deal with the earth as a solid (lithosphere), and oceanography, meteorology, limnology, upper atmosphere physics, etc., which deal with the earth's surface or nearby hydrosphere and atmosphere. Geodesy discusses the shape, size, and internal structure of the earth based on the results of geodetic observations, and also discusses crustal movements. Seismology detects seismic activity through seismic measurements, and uses the results to clarify the seismic activity of various regions on earth.
