Japanese: 多島海 - たとうかい（英語表記）archipelago

(1) The former name of the Aegean Sea, which stretches in the eastern European Mediterranean from southern Greece to western Türkiye.

(2) Seas with many islands, such as the Aegean Sea. The subsidence of undulating land or the rise in sea level during the postglacial period causes high areas to remain above sea level, forming an archipelago. The southwest coast of the Korean Peninsula, especially the waters near Mokpo, Japan's Seto Inland Sea, and Matsushima Bay in Miyagi Prefecture are all archipelagoes formed by subsidence.

(1)ヨーロッパ地中海の東部、ギリシア南部からトルコ西部にかけて広がるエーゲ海の旧称。

(2)エーゲ海のように島の多い海。起状の多い土地の沈降、または後氷期の海面上昇によって、高い所が海面上に残り、多島海となる。朝鮮半島の南西沖、とくに木浦(もくほ／モクポ)近海や、日本の瀬戸内海、宮城県の松島湾などは、沈降によってできた多島海である。
