992?-1035 King of Navarre in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Reigned from 1000 to 1035. Commonly known as Sancho the Great. He accepted the Cluny Reformation (Cluny Abbey) and protected the Santiago pilgrimage (Santiago de Compostela), thus strengthening relations with the Pyrenees and beyond, which had been scarce until then. At the same time, he controlled the area from the central Pyrenees through Castile to Leon, and was so powerful that his contemporaries called him the "King of Iberia." Although he was an excellent warrior, he showed no enthusiasm for the Reconquista and instead focused on domestic affairs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
