Oil azalea - Oil azalea

Japanese: アブラツツジ - あぶらつつじ
Oil azalea - Oil azalea

It is a deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family (APG classification: Ericaceae). The leaves are gathered at the ends of the branches, obovate, 2-3.5 cm long, and have fine sawtooth edges. It is called Abrazalea because the undersides have an oily sheen. In May and June, racemes hang down from the ends of the branches, and 5-13 small, vase-shaped green-white flowers grow. The fruits are small, globular, hanging down, with uncurved stalks. It is found in the Chubu region and north of Honshu, up to Miyagi Prefecture. A closely related species, Koaburazalea, which has hairless inflorescence axes, is found in the Tokai and Kinki regions, and Kochi Prefecture.
