Japanese: ニジマス(虹鱒) - ニジマス（英語表記）rainbow trout

A species of the genus Salmon in the family Salmonidae (illustration). It is named after the rainbow-colored bands that run vertically along the sides of its body. In addition to these, the sides of its body have green markings, and small black spots are scattered on the dorsal, fatty, and caudal fins, as well as on the parts of the body other than the abdomen. It grows to 40 cm in length. In America, some rainbow trout migrate to the sea and are sometimes caught during North Pacific fishing. They are called shoma and can reach 1 meter in length. They were once considered to be separate subspecies along with steelhead trout, but are now called the same species as rainbow trout.

サケ目サケ科ニジマス属の1種（イラスト）。体側ににじ色の帯状に輝いた部分が幅広く縦走しているところからこの名がついた。体側には，このほかに緑色の斑紋と，腹部を除いた部分および背びれ，あぶらびれ，尾びれなどに小黒点が散在している。全長40cmになる。アメリカではニジマスの中に海に下るものがあり，北洋漁業の際に漁獲されることがあり，ショマと呼ばれ，1mに達するものがある。これは，スチールヘッドトラウトとともに別亜種とされていたが，現在はニジマスと同一種名で呼ばれている。
