A city in southern Hokkaido. Established as a city in 1972. Located to the northwest of Muroran City and facing Uchiura Bay, the Muroran Main Line and the Do-o Expressway pass through the city. Due to the influence of the Tsushima Current, the climate is warm, so agriculture is thriving in the lowlands along the coast, producing potatoes, beans, spinach, asparagus, and other crops that are also processed. The city's name comes from the Date clan of the Sendai branch clan, who were instrumental in the development of the area. In March 2006, Otaki Village, Usu District, was incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 444.21 ^km2 . 36,278 people (2010).

北海道南部の市。1972年市制。室蘭市の北西隣で内浦湾に臨み，室蘭本線，道央自動車道が通じる。対馬海流の影響を受けて温暖なため，海岸沿いの低地は農業が盛んで，ジャガイモ，豆類，ホウレンソウ，アスパラガスなどを産し，農産加工も行われる。市名は開拓に功があった仙台支藩の伊達氏に由来。2006年３月有珠郡大滝村を編入。東日本大震災で，市内において被害が発生。444.21km²。３万6278人（2010）。
