A scholar of Chinese literature. His name was Isuro. He was from Niitsu, Niigata Prefecture. He took the name Komura after his hometown, Fukushimagata. Born into a family of scholars of Japanese classics and Chinese classics, he had a deep knowledge of Japanese and Chinese classics from an early age. He moved to Tokyo and entered the English department of Tokyo Senmon Gakko (the predecessor to Waseda University), and after graduating in 1892 (Meiji 25), he was invited by the Japan Newspaper Company as a visiting associate. He then traveled to China, where he studied calligraphy, paintings, and ceramics, and was known as a collector and connoisseur of them. He first held positions at Toyo University and Kokugakuin University, and later became a professor at Waseda University, where he lectured on Chinese poetry and prose. In the Chinese poetry world, he opposed the Qing poetry school led by Mori Shuntou and others, and attracted attention by reciting poems from the Han and Wei dynasties along with Kokubu Seigai and Ishida Toryo. In addition to being highly regarded as a teacher of poetry by Mori Ogai, he was also friends with such Negishi school writers as Masaoka Shiki, Miyake Setsurei, Riku Katsunan, and Nakamura Fusetsu, and recited poems with Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao, who were in exile during the Qing Dynasty's Bohtsu Coup. His book "Annotations of Chinese Classics" was widely welcomed in the academic world and has long been acclaimed as a masterpiece. His other books include "Comments on Chinese Poetry from the Past."
