The longest river in Turkey, it flows from the mountains in eastern Anatolia north through central Anatolia and empties into the Black Sea. Its total length is 1,355 km, and its drainage area is 150,000 km2. The name of the river means "red river." Wheat and tobacco are produced in the delta region at the mouth of the river. Dams such as Bayram Hacir, Hirfanlı, and Kaprıkaya have been built in the midstream, contributing to domestic and industrial electricity production and irrigation.
