Also known as spontaneous emission. A phenomenon in which atoms, molecules, etc., in an excited state naturally emit light (electromagnetic waves) without the aid of any external action, and move to another steady state with lower energy. The majority of light emission phenomena from substances are due to spontaneous emission, and because light emission occurs independently and randomly in each particle, the synthesized emitted light is light with a distorted phase. In addition, the average time that atoms or molecules remain in an excited state is called their lifetime, and because the lifetime is proportional to the cube of the wavelength of the electromagnetic waves emitted, spontaneous emission becomes more likely to occur suddenly when the wavelength becomes shorter. → Stimulated emission Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
