Basket-star

A general term for marine animals belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Ophiuroidea, order Serpentiformes, family Pycnonotidae. An animal with a bizarre appearance resembling tangled vines or seaweed. The scientific name (genus) of the representative species, Ophiuroidea, Gorgonocephalus, means the head of the mysterious woman Gorgon from Greek mythology. All of Gorgon's hair is made of living snakes, and it is said that anyone who looks at her face is turned to stone, but the living, moving appearance of this animal is worthy of its name, giving it a bizarre appearance, as if hundreds of small snakes were wriggling together. Originally a member of the Ophiuroidea family, it has a round disk in the center of its body with five arms extending out, but as the arms branch out many times towards the tips, the overall appearance looks like countless vines intertwined together, and each one moves in a twisting, snake-like manner, giving the viewer a bizarre impression. Large species can reach a diameter of 50 centimeters or more. Body colors include dark purple, black, brown, light yellow, and salmon pink. Over a dozen species are known from the waters off Japan, including the Gorgonocephalus eucnemis and Astrocladus coniferus, and they are found in depths ranging from a few dozen meters to the deep sea floor 1,500 meters below.

棘皮(きょくひ)動物門クモヒトデ綱革蛇尾目テヅルモヅル科に属する海産動物の総称。絡まり合ったつる草、あるいは海藻のような異様な外観の動物。代表種オキノテヅルモヅルの学名（属名）Gorgonocephalusは、ギリシア神話にでてくる怪女ゴルゴンの頭を意味する。ゴルゴンの頭髪はすべて生きたヘビからなり、その顔を見た者は石に化せられるというが、この動物の生きて動く姿はその名にふさわしく、あたかも数百匹の小蛇が塊となってうごめいているような奇怪な感じを与える。元来、クモヒトデの仲間であり、体の中央に丸い盤があって、5本の腕が伸び出るが、腕が先のほうへいくにつれ何度も枝分れしているため、全体として無数のつるが絡み合ったような形となり、またその1本1本がくねくねとヘビのような動き方をするため、見る者に異様な感じを与えることとなる。大形種は直径50センチメートル以上になる。体色は暗紫色、黒色、茶褐色、淡黄色、サーモンピンクなどのものがある。日本近海からはオキノテヅルモヅルGorgonocephalus eucnemis、セノテヅルモヅルAstrocladus coniferusなど十数種が知られ、水深数十メートルの所から1500メートルの深海底まで分布する。
