Tatsumi Garden - Tatsumi Garden

Japanese:
Tatsumi Garden - Tatsumi Garden

A joke book. Published in 1770 (Meiwa 7). Written by Muchu Sanjin Negoto sensei. This is the first joke book to describe Fukagawa, a representative pleasure quarter of Edo along with Yoshiwara. Jorai, a half-way savvy samurai, boasts of his knowledge and guides the country samurai Shingozaemon to a small flower shop in front of Fukagawa Hachiman, where his half-way knowledge is completely exposed. The story is told in contrast to Shiko, a fellow visitor to Fukagawa, and includes explanations of the common sayings and popular phrases of Fukagawa, incorporating many elements of the "ugachi" style that would later become the mainstream of joke books. It also had a major influence on the creation of "Kinkin Sensei Eiga no Yume" (1775), the first yellow-covered book.
