Bean tiger beetle (English name) Epicauta gorhami

Japanese: マメハンミョウ（英語表記）Epicauta gorhami

Coleoptera, Meloidae. Body length 12-17mm. The whole body is matte black, but most of the head is shiny red, and the central longitudinal stripe and both side edges of the prothorax, the scutella, the lateral edges of the elytra, the meeting point, and the central longitudinal stripe are grayish white. The longitudinal stripes of the elytra are often significantly degenerate in cold-climate specimens. The cheeks of the head are strongly protruding. The prothorax is small and narrows forward into a neck-like shape. The elytra are slender, with both side edges nearly parallel. The larvae undergo hypermetamorphosis and feed on egg masses of locusts and other insects. The adults appear from summer to autumn, feeding on the leaves of various plants and can cause damage to soybeans. They are found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. (→ Ground blister beetles )
