Inkaku - Inkaku

Japanese:
Inkaku - Inkaku
Years of birth: Unknown. A Buddhist sculptor of the In school in the late Heian period. Said to be the son or disciple of Insuke. He is known for his achievements, beginning with the construction of the Amida Buddha statue at the request of the regent Fujiwara Tadazane in 1114, up until around 1136. During this time, he went through a period of misfortune as he was implicated in the downfall of Tadazane in 1120, but returned to the world of Buddhist sculpting with the repair of the Buddhist statue at Hino Shindo in 1127. In the same year, he became a Hokkyo for his achievements in the construction of the Buddha statue at Hokongo-in Temple in Kyoto at the request of Taikenmon-in, and in 1132 he was promoted to the rank of Hogan. After that, he constructed Buddha statues for the imperial court at Hokongo-in Temple, Hojo-ji Temple, Shirakawa-dono, and other places, and established his position as a Buddhist sculptor. The existing seated Amida Buddha statue at Hokongo-in Temple is said to be his work, and shows an elegant style that inherits the true lineage of the Jocho style. <References> Kobayashi Tsuyoshi, "Study on Japanese Sculptors", Shimizu Masumi, "The Life of a Buddhist Sculptor in the Insei Period: Concerning the Buddhist Sculptor Inkaku" (Kyoto National Museum, "Buddhist Statues in the Insei Period: From Jocho to Unkei")
