TASS (English spelling) towed array sonar system

Japanese: タス(英語表記)towed array sonar system; TASS
TASS (English spelling) towed array sonar system
A passive sonar equipped on surface ships and submarines. A linear array of receivers is towed by a cable to receive and detect noise emitted by submarines and other vessels. It is capable of searching for targets at greater distances because it receives low-frequency sound waves that are less attenuated in seawater than conventional cylindrical passive sonars. TASS is divided into TAC TASS (Tactical Towed Passive Sonar), which is equipped on combat vessels and is suitable for high-speed operation, and SUR TASS (Surveillance Towed Passive Sonar), which is equipped on auxiliary vessels and is used exclusively for wide-area surveillance at low speeds.

TASS
TASS; Telegrafnoe Agentstvo Sovetskovo Soyuza

A state-run news agency of the former Soviet Union, headquartered in Moscow. One of the leading international news agencies. Its predecessor was ROSTA (Rossijskoe Telegrafnoe Agentstvo), founded in 1918, and became TASS in 1925. It had 650 domestic correspondents and overseas correspondents in 65 countries, and distributed to approximately 4,500 newspapers. After democratization, in 1991 it became an independent state institution of the Russian Federation from a state-run news agency directly under the Council of Ministers, and in 1992 it was renamed ITAR-TASS.
