A passive sonar equipped on surface ships and submarines. A linear array of receivers is towed by a cable to receive and detect noise emitted by submarines and other vessels. It is capable of searching for targets at greater distances because it receives low-frequency sound waves that are less attenuated in seawater than conventional cylindrical passive sonars. TASS is divided into TAC TASS (Tactical Towed Passive Sonar), which is equipped on combat vessels and is suitable for high-speed operation, and SUR TASS (Surveillance Towed Passive Sonar), which is equipped on auxiliary vessels and is used exclusively for wide-area surveillance at low speeds.
