Masamu Yanase

Born: January 12, 1900, Matsuyama
Died: May 25, 1945. A representative proletarian manga artist in Tokyo in the early Showa period. His real name was Shoroku. After finishing elementary school in Kokura, he moved to Tokyo in 1915 at the age of 15 and studied at the Japan Art Academy Research Institute and other institutions. In the same year, his oil painting "Flow of Light and Wind" was selected for the 2nd Japan Art Academy Exhibition. He became interested in Futurism, and in 1921 he became a member of the "Sower" group. In 1925, he became a reporter for the "Proletarian Newspaper" and began drawing full-scale proletarian manga, sharply satirizing the policies and capitalists of the time. He also had his manga published in "Tokyo Pack," and in 1932, he was arrested on suspicion of violating the "Peace Preservation Law," and after being released on bail, he began drawing under the pen name of Natsukawa Hachiro. He introduced the German anti-war artist G. Gross to the world, and was strongly influenced by him.

昭和初期の代表的プロレタリア漫画作家。本名，正六。小倉で小学校を終え，1915年 15歳で上京し，日本美術院研究所などで学ぶ。同年，第2回日本美術院展に油絵『光と風の流れ』が入選。未来派に傾倒し，21年には「種蒔く人」同人となる。その後 25年には，『無産者新聞』の記者となって本格的なプロレタリア漫画をかきはじめ，当時の政策や資本家を痛烈に風刺した。また『東京パック』にも漫画を載せ，32年に「治安維持法」違反の疑いで検挙され，保釈されてからは夏川八郎のペンネームで描いた。ドイツの反戦画家 G.グロッスを世に紹介し，その影響を強く受けた。
