Iida-ya Hachiroemon

A ceramic artist from the end of the Edo period who brought new direction to the revival of Kutani ware. Born in Kaga (Daishoji, Kaga city, Ishikawa prefecture), he was a painter at a dyeing shop by his family. In 1831, Miyamotoya Uemon, who had taken over Yoshidaya Kiln of the Daishoji domain, welcomed him as his chief craftsman, and he completely changed his style, developing a detailed Chinese style of painting using a deep, lustrous red on a white porcelain base, and further adding gold paint in fine lines to complete gorgeous overpainted porcelain with a strong Chinese influence. This style is called Hachiro-te. Thus, the two major styles of Kutani ware were established, with this Kinran-te added to the Ko-Kutani style. After Hachiro-emon's death, Miyamotoya Kiln went into decline.

江戸末期の陶画工。再興九谷焼に新しい方針を与えた。加賀(石川県加賀市大聖寺)生まれ。家業は染物屋の絵付師であった。天保2(1831)年に大聖寺藩の吉田屋窯を引き継いだ宮本屋宇右衛門に主工として迎えられ,作風も一変させて,白磁胎に濃艶な赤を使って細密な中国画風を展開させ,さらに金泥を細かい線描で加え,中国趣味の強い華やかな色絵磁器を完成させた。この作風を八郎手という。こうして九谷焼は,古九谷様式にこの金襴手が加わり,2大様式が成立した。八郎右衛門の没後,宮本屋窯は衰微した。
