Takashi Tatsuno - The wealth of Tatsuno

French literature scholar and essayist. Born in Tokyo as the eldest son of architect Tatsuno Kingo. Graduated from the Department of Buddhist Law and the Department of French Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. In 1921 (Taisho 10), he was appointed assistant professor at Tokyo Imperial University and immediately went to France to study for two years, and on his return became the first Japanese person to teach French literature at the university. In 1930 (Showa 5), ​​he received his doctorate in literature (his doctoral thesis was "An Introduction to the Study of Baudelaire") and in 1931 he became a professor. Breaking away from the traditional narrative academism, he established a fresh academic style full of wit, backed by aesthetic sensibility and broad culture, and his students included Watanabe Kazuo and Kobayashi Hideo. He wrote many books, including a collection of critical essays, The Eyes of the Foolish Bird (1922), a collection of research papers, French Literature, volumes 1 and 2 (1943, 1946), witty and elegant essays, Sa-e-ra (1931) and Unforgettable People (1939), as well as translations of Molière's The Solitary Guest and Beaumarchais' The Marriage of Figaro. After retiring from the University of Tokyo in 1948 (Showa 23), he became a professor at Chuo University. He was made a member of the Japan Art Academy (1948) and a Person of Cultural Merit (1962).

フランス文学者、随筆家。建築家辰野金吾(きんご)の長男として東京に生まれる。東京帝国大学仏法科、同仏文科を卒業。1921年(大正10)東京帝大助教授に就任直後フランスに約2年間留学、帰国とともに同大学日本人初のフランス文学講座担当者となる。30年(昭和5)文学博士(学位論文は『ボオドレエル研究序説』)、31年教授。従来の祖述的アカデミズムを脱し、美的感覚と広い教養に裏づけられた、機知あふれる清新な学風を確立、門下から渡辺一夫(かずお)、小林秀雄らが輩出した。評論集『信天翁(あほうどり)の眼玉(めだま)』(1922)、研究論集『仏蘭西(フランス)文学』上下(1943、46)、軽妙洒脱(しゃだつ)な随筆『さ・え・ら』(1931)、『忘れ得ぬ人々』(1939)など多くの著書、モリエール『孤客』、ボーマルシェ『フィガロの結婚』などの翻訳を残す。48年(昭和23)東大退職後は中央大学教授を務める。日本芸術院会員(1948)、文化功労者(1962)。
