Japanese: 超数学 - ちょうすうがく（英語表記）metamathematics

The essence of proof in mathematics is to establish basic relationships between mathematical symmetries, that is, axioms, and to apply the rules of syllogistic reasoning to these axioms or already obtained theorems, always progressing to new theorems. This is like a game, and as this game continues, it is impossible to predict in advance what result will emerge as a provable theorem, and therefore it cannot be considered true knowledge. However, by verifying that this game of mathematics never reaches a contradiction, it is possible to elevate the game from a mere game to the level of knowledge. The study that aims to establish consistency in such proofs is called metamathematics. In this case, the game itself is what we call mathematics. The name metamathematics was coined by D. Hilbert.

数学における証明の本質は，数学的対称の間の基本的な関係すなわち公理を立て，三段論法的推論の規則を，これらの公理またはすでに得られた定理に適用して，常に新しい定理へと進むことにある。これは1つのゲームに似ており，このゲームを続けていくと，どのような結果が証明可能な定理として出てくるかは，あらかじめ予測できず，したがって真の認識とはなりえない。しかし，この数学というゲームが，決して矛盾に達しないということを確かめることによって，ゲームを単なるゲームから認識の段階へと高めることができる。このような証明における無矛盾性の確立を目的とする学問を，超数学という。この場合のゲームそのものがいわゆる数学である。超数学という名は D.ヒルベルトによって提唱された。
