A perennial grass of the grass family that grows on mountain forest floors (illustration). The Japanese name, Ryu-no-hige, comes from the appearance of spikelets at the ends of slender branches. It grows loosely in clumps, with several hard scales at the base of the stem. The stem is thin and hard, bending at the lower nodes, and rises to a height of 30-50 cm. The leaves are sparsely alternate, lanceolate, 20-30 cm long and 1-1.4 cm wide, and gradually narrow at the end until they become long and pointed. The flowering season is August-September. The inflorescence is a very sparse cone-like shape, 10-20 cm long, with 2-3 thread-like branches from several nodes, which branch once or twice, and each branch has a single spikelet at its tip.
