Joetsu Shinkansen

Joetsu Shinkansen

This is a Shinkansen line operated by East Japan Railway Company, which runs 269.5 km between Omiya in Saitama Prefecture and Niigata (303.6 km in commercial operation). Construction began in December 1971, and the Omiya-Niigata section opened in November 1982. In 1985, the Ueno-Omiya section was completed as part of the Tohoku Shinkansen, and in 1991, it was able to run into Tokyo Station along with the Tohoku Shinkansen. Most trains run between Tokyo and Niigata. As it crosses the Honshu mountain range near the Joetsu border, there are many tunnel sections, and especially between Takasaki and Nagaoka, 78% of the total length is made up of tunnels. Among these, there are seven tunnels over 5,000 meters, including the Daishimizu Tunnel (22,221 meters), which is one of the largest railway tunnels in the world. As it runs through areas with heavy snowfall, snow countermeasures facilities, mainly snow sprinklers and snow shelters, are in place.
