A Bedda ethnic group found scattered throughout the lowlands of eastern Sumatra and the Barisan Mountains in Indonesia. They are said to have once been widespread throughout the Malay Archipelago, but have since been assimilated by the Malays and others, resulting in a significant decline in their numbers. Originally hunter-gatherers, they lived in primitive, mobile bands, but more and more of them have taken up farming. They once lived in dwellings on piles. They practice bird divination while hunting, and are also known for their shamanism.
