1863‐1930 A master of Russian stage design. A member of the "World of Art" school. He is particularly known for the innovative use of stage extensions and stagehands, as well as the pictorial decorativeness of his productions of "Don Juan" (1910) and "Un Ballo in Maskes" (1917), both directed by Meyerhold. He was also the first Russian painter to create harmony on stage, taking charge of the sets, costumes, and props. Other notable works after the revolution include "The Marriage of Figaro" (1927) for the Moscow Art Theatre, among others. He has also painted many portraits.
