Armenian poet. Studied at Narek Monastery in the south of Lake Van. He was the first Armenian poet to break the mold of pedantic and dogmatic religious literature. For this reason, he was also suspected of heresy. His lyric mystical poem "Lament" (1002), which opposes the feudal social order, has been translated into English, French, and other languages. His great-uncle was Anania Shirakatsi, a thinker who contributed to the establishment of the hierarchy of the Armenian Church, and his father Khosrow was also a famous writer of his time.
